Parent Engagement
Fine Motor Skill Time
Fine motor skill is the coordination of small muscle movements usually involving small, precise thumb, finger, hand, and wrist movements.Activities that promote fine motor skills prepare the hand for writing.
- It helps children refine their pincer grips (grasping an object with
thumb and index finger) - The movement of the wrist leads to control and coordination when
writing or colouring. - Picking up, manipulating, and exercising the small muscles in the
palm enables children to gain control and strength while colouring,
drawing, and cutting.
Let’s get ready to strengthen the fine motor skill in our children
Why Parent Engagement ?
While children need time to play alone and with other children, playing with adults has its own unique advantages.More importantly, you become more aware and sensitive to your child’s developmental
needs. This awareness – of what your child knows, feels, needs, what his/her interests are,
what skills they need to work on, and so on – will make you more confident as a
decision-maker and parent. To make the most out of your parent-child play or activity time, there are some things
to keep in mind:
- Observe them playing.
- Listen to their stories and play along.
- Go with their chosen mode of play – ball, blocks, drawing, running…
Have a conversation with them but do not interrupt them when it is their turn to talk/
do the activity.Let them make mistakes. Allow them the freedom to explore the different
ways of doing an activity.Following these will help you understand if an activity is working or not. If it is holding your child’s interest, or how you can change it around a bit it to interest them. You are the best judge of your child’s capabilities and current mood.Do remember that while your child will love playing with you, sometimes they may
prefer to play by themselves or with their friends/sibling. Let them. There is always
another time.
